Homeowners should prepare for the unexpected this hurricane seasonPosted On Wed, June 2, 2010
Hurricane season is officially under way along the Gulf Coast and that means home and business owners alike should prepare for the worst.
The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends that those that own homes or businesses take a number of steps to ensure that they are ready for a hurricane to hit.
The SBA says that "disaster preparedness begins with having adequate insurance coverage, at least enough to rebuild your home or business," and that owners should review their policies to see what is and is not covered. It also recommends that businesses take out "business interruption insurance" and flood insurance, the latter of which it calls essential.
Homes and businesses should also have a written emergency response plan, make copies of all important records and possess a disaster survival kit that includes a flashlight, radio, batteries, first-aid kit, non-perishable food and bottled water, a tool kit, plastic bags, money and a disposable camera to take pictures of the damage.
Meteorologists believe this could be the strongest hurricane season ever, according to FOX News. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there could be three to seven major hurricanes this summer.
