Homeowners insurance provides some liability protectionPosted On Thu, September 23, 2010
Many families opt to get homeowners insurance because they want to protect their biggest asset in the event of a disaster or theft. However, the coverage can prove valuable under other circumstances as well.
The Insurance Information Institute says that most homeowners and renters insurance policies provide some level of liability protection. Such coverage can prove to be crucial in the event of an accident on a person's property.
"Somebody could slip and fall in your front yard and you could be legally liable," says III spokesperson and senior vice president Jeanne Salvatore. "Check with your agent or company representative to be sure you have enough liability insurance to protect your assets in case you're sued."
Earlier this month, New York Insurance Commissioner James Wrynn urged residents to review their homeowners and renters insurance policies. He noted that people should change their policies every so often to ensure they are properly covered.
For example, someone who has one yard sale a year may find that their current homeowners insurance policy provides enough coverage in the event of an accident. However, if over time a person ends up having several yard sales a year, additional coverage may be necessary.
