Home insurance coverage in the winter monthsPosted On Tue, November 10, 2009
As areas of the country face the approach of winter weather, people should make sure their properties are protected with the right home insurance.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, 8 percent of catastrophic damages in the country were the result of winter storms from 1989 to 2008.
"The first step to protect yourself against Old Man Winter is to make sure your home and possessions are properly insured," Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president with the III, said.
Salvatore said that a number of things are covered under a person's standard home insurance policy. Those would include winter-related problems like burst pipes and ice dams. However, flooding in the home from melting groundwater is not covered, and homeowners need special flood insurance if they want to make sure they are protected.
Along with having the right home insurance coverage, property owners should make sure their houses are ready for winter. That would include keeping gutters clean and sealing cracks in the home.
Making sure a home is prepared for winter can not only help people when it comes to insurance, it can also lead to some cost savings on energy bills. Having houses properly sealed can decrease home heating costs.
