Holiday shoppers: Watch out for parking lot fiendsPosted On Tue, December 4, 2012
Although the holidays are a time of the year when most people are feeling very generous, a few bad apples can spoil the bunch, and leaving vehicles vulnerable to break-ins while on holiday shopping trips could result in disappointed consumers.
According to the Hanover Insurance Group, the holidays can be a dangerous time for unsuspecting consumers who don't take precautions against vehicle break-ins and theft.
Fortunately, there are a few ways that smart drivers can protect against this occurrence. For example, Hanover recommends that consumers take care to park in well-lit, crowded areas. Although it might seem smarter to avoid the crowds and find a secluded spot, that could also make it easier for thieves to act unnoticed.
Additionally, holiday shoppers should be on their guard while walking to their cars after a shopping trip. Thieves target consumers who are alone, distracted, carrying too many bags or talking on the phone. Walking quickly and with purpose could help shoppers to keep the cheer during this festive season.
Consumers who do have to deal with a break-in could see increased insurance rates on their vehicle if they aren't careful. If the insurance provider believes that the driver lives in an unsafe area, they may consider raising the rates.
