Holiday fires highlight importance of insurance coveragePosted On Mon, November 29, 2010
The thought of holiday guests can spur homeowners into a cleaning spree. While having a tidy residence is important, home insurance is also something people should keep in mind.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety notes $1.3 million in property damage was incurred by residents of the states last year during Thanksgiving. With Christmas and New Year's just around the corner, two more holidays associated with social gatherings could yield similar outcomes if people aren't careful.
Becki White, deputy state fire marshal, says this time of year can be chaotic, but it isn't an excuse for not following safety measures.
"Holiday cooking is complicated by guests and lots of activity," says White. "But following these rules is not difficult, and it can prevent destruction and injuries."
Home insurance can help people get funds necessary to replace their house and possessions should a fire ruin their belongings. Some may feel the coverage is not necessary, but they may think otherwise when taking into account the potential expenses associated with replacing everything without insurance.
