Hold down auto insurance rate by watching for pedestriansPosted On Mon, September 28, 2009
Taking the time to watch for pedestrians can help drivers hold down auto insurance rates while also averting tragedy and avoiding possible legal entanglements.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of pedestrians who were struck and killed by vehicles in 2007 actually decreased 13 percent. However, 4,654 people were still killed as they walked on the nation's roads that year.
The government notes that a pedestrian is killed every 113 minutes and injured in a traffic mishap every eight minutes, amounting to about 70,000 annual injuries per year.
About 70 percent of those involved in pedestrian related fatalities were reported to be male, and 73 percent of all of these fatalities took place in urban areas.
Looking ahead, the matter could only become more significant in the coming years in light of a Washington Post report noting that engineers are already working on ways to add more sound to electric vehicles so that pedestrians will hear them coming.
Whether that becomes an issue in the coming years, overall traffic safety will still depend heavily on drivers who take the time to look out for pedestrians at crosswalks and elsewhere. Doing so can avoid legal trouble as well as high auto insurance rates.
