Healthcare reform law defended in court

Posted On Mon, May 17, 2010

A number of states have banded together in an effort to block the passage of the healthcare reform law, but the Obama administration has asked a court to decline their effort, according to Reuters.

The healthcare reform bill was one of the most controversial laws to pass in decades, and last week the Justice Department said its passage was perfectly legal, the news agency said. Besides states, conservative interest groups have also taken action against the legislation.

The Justice Department said that "they bring this suit four years before the provision they challenge takes effect, demonstrate no current injury, and merely speculate whether the law will harm them once it is in force,'' Reuters reported.

Most opposition to the law is backed by the belief that it is unconstitutional to require U.S. citizens to have health insurance. One of the interest groups, the Thomas More Law Center, also said that it is opposed to the bill because it believes abortions would be funded through federal taxes.

The coverage of abortions was taken out of the healthcare reform act before it was approved. Experts believe it was the most controversial issue holding back the passage of the bill. ADNFCR-2297-ID-19782446-ADNFCR
