Healthcare mandates increase insurance costsPosted On Mon, March 5, 2012
The Council for Affordable Health Insurance recently released a report showing that in 2011, health insurance mandates increased by more than 100 compared to the previous year, and these spike insurance costs.
In 2011, there was a total of 2,262 health insurance mandates from state governments, which was an increase from the previous year's figure of 2,156, according to the report. Coverage costs can increase significantly from these programs. Depending on multiple aspects, including state, insurance policy type and legislation, health coverage costs can rise by as much as 10 to 50 percent.
"The recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on the design of the essential health benefit plans ostensibly grants states the flexibility to craft affordable benefit packages suitable to their populations," said Roy Ramthun, director of federal affairs for CAHI.
Consumers who are stuck with paying high fees due to mandates may want to see if they can find a plan that is less expensive. Examining health insurance rates may help them find what they are searching for.
