Health Insurance: Necessity or Luxury?Posted On Fri, January 13, 2012
If you can show me the person who never gets sick or injured, I can show you the person for whom health insurance is a luxury. As for the rest of us, health insurance is a necessity. Medical costs are through the ceiling. Just one trip to the ER will clearly illustrate that health insurance is mandatory. Should you need to be hospitalized, you will find that the costs are astronomical. As a matter of fact, some hospitals will not even treat you if you don’t have health insurance. Same-day surgical procedures, where you do not even spend the night, can cost thousands. In some places, they’re charging at least $150 for a pregnancy test - the same type of test that you can pick up at the local drug store for $10. In most cases ,if you are female these tests are mandatory prior to most procedures, whether you are able to get pregnant or not. Besides the costs, having health insurance just makes good sense.
Having health insurance will avail you and your family of non-emergency health care. That means you will be able to see the doctor and deal with health issues before they become acute and require an ER visit. You will also be able to take advantage of preventive health measures, which ultimately save money. Health insurance is not a luxury. It is a sensible, important necessity that should be afforded all citizens.
