Health insurance coverage rates varies between counties

Posted On Fri, July 30, 2010

Health insurance coverage vary widely not just from state to state, but among counties. The U.S. Census Bureau recently published data on health insurance coverage in 2007.

Among the study's findings was the fact that just over 20 percent of those residing in California lacked coverage. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the more rural communities tended to have lower rates of coverage, possibly because such areas tend to lack stable job options.

Many people obtain health insurance coverage through their employer, so it's possible that coverage data will vary even more for recent years when the recession was in full-force.

Colorado Health Care Policy and Financing Director Joan Henneberry points out that outreach efforts should be tailored to different communities as they have different needs.

"In Colorado, like in many western states, there is such a variation in the number of uninsured from county to county and the needs of the individuals who live in frontier counties or in rural or urban counties," says Henneberry. "To have county-level data on health insurance by demographic characteristics really helps to develop the right strategy for coverage and access, and to be better able to monitor success."ADNFCR-2297-ID-19915168-ADNFCR
