Health insurance coverage increasingPosted On Thu, September 15, 2011
A recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau announced the number of insured Americans increased from 2009 to 2010.
The number of insured consumers increased to 256.2 million, according to the Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2010 report. This was slightly higher than 2009's figure of 255.3 million people, but the percentages of those with health insurance did not differ much when comparing the two years.
The ratio of people covered by private insurers dropped slightly to 64 percent in 2010, the report said. This was lower than the 64.5 percent recorded in 2009. Government health insurance coverage increased to 31 percent of Americans in 2010 from 30.6 percent in 2009. The percentage of consumers who were covered by employment-sponsored health insurance declined during this time as well. In 2009, the figure was 56.1 percent, while in 2010, it was 55.3 percent.
The findings in the report may signal that more consumers of all pay grades may want to inquire about lower health insurance rates, as this may help more people become covered.
