Health insurance concerns taking their toll on AmericansPosted On Wed, August 19, 2009
Americans are showing less faith in the healthcare system amid a growing debate about health insurance and access to medical treatment.
According to the latest Health Care Consumer Confidence Index from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the latest index reading stands at 97.2. In June, this figure stood at 102.3, indicating a 5.2 point drop.
"It is no surprise that consumer confidence in health care is erratic right now. People are confused about all of the different information they are hearing and not sure whom to trust," said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The foundation notes that seniors eligible for Medicare tend to display the strongest faith in the overall healthcare system, although their confidence fell 10.4 points in the past month. Those between ages 50 and 64 are said to have the lowest confidence in the healthcare system.
Also, 51.9 percent in the monthly survey said they fear being able to pay for future health care needs, while 35.6 percent expressed concern about being unable to pay for prescriptions in the future. Fortunately, those who take the time to shop around for a health insurance policy can often find coverage that fits their budget.
