Health clinics funding doubles

Posted On Thu, March 25, 2010

The health care reform bill signed into law Tuesday will double the amount of funding that health clinics receive.

Health clinics nationwide will receive $10 billion in federal funds over the next five years.

These community health centers currently only receive about $2 billion of federal funds annually, the Wall Street Journal reports. The basic care at these health centers are essential to 20 million patients.

The National Association of Community Health Centers believes the extra funding will help the health clinics treat an additional 20 million people. "It could be the future of primary health care in America," Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said.

The health care law includes a large expansion of Medicaid, the biggest since its founding, the Wall Street Journal reports. Even though the new law attempts to prevent undocumented citizens from receiving health care, the health clinic funding could in fact offer them aid.

The health care reform bill has sharp critics and at least 14 states have threatened to file a federal lawsuit.

Critics are also concerned that the new law doesn't provide adequate coverage for children with pre-existing medical conditions. This and other issues will be addressed in upcoming amendments to the bill.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19690229-ADNFCR
