Health care system may become more proactive towards treatmentPosted On Tue, August 31, 2010
The recent levels of high unemployment have meant many people have had to do without adequate health insurance. This may be especially true for those who were getting their health insurance through their employer.
The effects of not getting regular health care, even when not feeling sick, can have an impact on everyone. Preventative care measures, for example, can help stop certain conditions from developing and can stop certain diseases from spreading.
Doctor and Towers Watson senior health care consultant Harlan Levine says that health care reform may help the industry transform into one which is more proactive about treating medical conditions.
"Historically, America's health care system has been focused on the treatment of illness, and this provision is an essential first step to reframe the industry, proactively focusing on the preservation of health," says Levine. "The legislation promotes free preventive care and emphasizes the importance of early detection and regular doctor visits in helping both adults and children stay healthy."
Diabetes is one condition that can be mitigated through preventative care screenings. The disease affects nearly 24 million people in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If people realize they are at a high risk for developing the disease, they can improve their lifestyles.
