Growing number of Americans have high-deductible health insurance

Posted On Thu, May 20, 2010

More than 10 million Americans now have high-deductible health insurance plans, a growth of over 25 percent.

According to a report from America's Health Insurance Plans, an insurance group, that growing number still represents a minority of health insurance policy holders. The policies, which are typically tied to health savings accounts or other health-reimbursement plans, make up just 4.8 percent of those for people under 65 with private insurance nationwide.

The study found that many of HDHP holders, about 50 percent, are parts of large-group coverage plans, which boomed 33 percent between January 2009 and January 2010. Similarly, the number of small-group policy holders grew 22 percent. The reason, according to the Kansas City Star, is that more employers are attempting to transfer the cost of health insurance to their employees.

Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of AHIP, said that these plans "continue to be an important coverage option for families and small businesses across the country."

In all, roughly 7.9 million Americans, 79 percent of those covered by high-deductible health insurance plans, are covered as part of a group, rather than as individuals.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19790583-ADNFCR
