Group fights for mental health funds

Posted On Thu, August 19, 2010

Healthcare reform has a slew of new provisions that aim at providing affordable healthcare for everyone. While expanding health services stands to benefit many people, it is a costly thing to do. Budgets have to be readjusted to provide such care at the expense of other services.

The Mental Health and Mental Retardation Coalition is urging Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell not to cut into the mental health services budget. The group says it has already taken the burden of budget cuts and needs funds to provide crucial services.

"Further cuts to mental health services will not create net savings but only increase costs from emergency room utilization, inpatient admissions, and needs for correctional facilities," says PA Community Providers Association executive director George Kimes.

Even though funds are tight, cutting financial support for mental health services could be devastating for those who need them. According to a Mental Health America survey, the poor economy is taking its toll on Americans. The survey found that the unemployed are four times more likely to exhibit mental health problems. With unemployment still high, more people may be seeking such services than in the past.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19928391-ADNFCR
