Grilling safety tips as homeowners celebrate the Fourth of JulyPosted On Tue, June 28, 2011
According to the Hearth, patio and Barbecue Association, 82 percent of U.S. households own a grill, and one of the most common times they use them is during summer holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Fourth of July.
With Independence Day approaching, State Farm is offering homeowners some grilling safety tips.
According to the source, 30 percent of all grilling fires start on a balcony or patio. Thus, State Farm says homeowners should be sure to grill away from standing structures.
In addition to being away from structures, the insurer says hibachis should be set up at least three feet away from people or things that may come into contact with the grill, such as children or pets.
Once lunch or dinner has been cooked and the food is ready to be served, the source says the grill's lid should be closed, as it helps ensure the flame cannot reignite by shutting off its oxygen supply.
By following these tips, homeowners may be able to decrease their risk of having to file a home insurance claim.
