GM the latest automaker to issue recall of vehicles

Posted On Tue, March 2, 2010

If automakers can take solace in anything, it's that misery loves company.

General Motors has become the latest auto manufacturer to issue a safety recall for a number of its vehicles, reporting on Tuesday that 1.3 million vehicles were recalled due to problems with their power steering assist systems.

The recall affects four vehicle models that are sold across North America: the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was notified of the recall by GM following an investigation that had been initiated by the administration on January 27 after they had received 1,100 complaints from drivers regarding the steering assist.

"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," said Jamie Hresko, GM Vice President of Quality. "Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind."

The recall by GM comes after a massive recall by Toyota earlier this month that saw more than 5 million taken off the roads because of faulty brakes, accelerators, and/or front drive shafts. Hyundai also recently recalled 1,300 vehicles in the U.S. due to faulty front latches.

With the numerous defects that have been revealed in the past month, it should serve as a reminder to be equipped with appropriate auto insurance coverage so an accident caused by a defective car will have its costs covered no matter what.
