GHSA releases detailed study regarding distracted driving

Posted On Fri, July 8, 2011

One of the most comprehensive studies to date was just released about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving.

The nonprofit Governors Highway Safety Association put the report together, which details what distracted driving is, how prevalent it has become, its consequences and what officials are doing in order to prevent it from taking place.

"Despite all that has been written about driver distraction, there is still a lot that we do not know," said Barbara Harsha, executive director of the GHSA. "Much of the research is incomplete or contradictory. Clearly, more studies need to be done addressing both the scope of the problem and how to effectively address it."

Among the things the report makes clear is cellphone use increases crash risk, driving distractions are associated with one out of every four traffic accidents and distractions adversely affect driving performance.

GHSA recommends state officials continue to employ countermeasures to curb distracted driving, such as enforcing and implementing cell phone and texting bans.

Motorists who violate these bans are usually fined and often see increases in their auto insurance rates as a result.
