Georgia enlists in healthcare lawsuit

Posted On Wed, April 28, 2010

Some states threatened before the passage of the healthcare reform law that there would be lawsuits if it passed. Not only have those states followed through, but they have also recruited others to join.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that Georgia has joined the group of states suing the federal government over the passage of the healthcare legislation. There were originally 13 states, but six more have joined the suit filed last month.

According to Reuters, the suit claims the $2.5 trillion healthcare reform bill violates states' rights and will ultimately force them to pay for healthcare they cannot afford. Some believe this case will go all the way to the Supreme Court, but will ultimately side with the federal government, Reuters said.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum said in a statement that "the federal government cannot mandate that all citizens buy qualifying health care coverage or be forced to pay a tax penalty - this is unconstitutional. We will aggressively pursue this lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary to prevent this unprecedented expansion of federal powers, impact upon state sovereignty, and encroachment on our freedom."

The passage of the healthcare reform legislation was widely debated and one the most controversial and sweeping bills passed in decades. ADNFCR-2297-ID-19749069-ADNFCR
