Generation X car buyers gravitate toward SUVs, minivansPosted On Thu, July 14, 2011
A new study is out on what types of cars a certain segment of the population prefers when they're out buying a vehicle.
Car pricing and automotive trend website TrueCar.com reviewed the purchasing behavior of 200,000 car buyers between 2009 and 2010 and found that car buyers between the ages of 28 and 45 - or what some refer to as 'Generation X' - tend to buy minivans and sports utilities more than any other vehicle type.
"Generation X consumers prefer vehicles that fit their changing lifestyles and helped spur the demand for automakers to build larger, roomier vehicles," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of trends and analysis at TrueCar. "This post baby boomer generation has greater purchasing power and values practical luxury and safety features for their families."
The report also revealed what brands were most popular among 28 to 45-year-olds. The largest segment of Generation X buyers gravitated toward Volkswagen at 43.3 percent. Land Rover, Audi, Mazda and Jeep rounded out the top five.
In addition, TrueCar's survey detailed which make and model had the biggest discount compared to the manufacturer's suggested retail price. Auto insurance rates may be affected by a vehicle's make and model as well.
