General Motors reports 27 percent increase in car salesPosted On Fri, May 6, 2011
General Motors moved quite a few cars last month and the price at the pump appears to have driven the increased sales activity.
According to GM, 232,538 vehicles were sold by by the American car maker nationwide, a 27 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
Car buyers were particularly keen on GM's newest fuel-efficient models such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado HD and Cruze, as sales jumped 76 percent year-over-year.
Speaking of the Cruze, GM said it had its best selling month since it was introduced in 2008 with total sales in excess of 25,000.
Don Johnson, vice president of U.S. sales operations, said the Cruze and other fuel-efficient models are what made last month so successful.
"Recently, rising fuel prices have led many to re-think their vehicle choice," Johnson said. "Because of the investments we’ve made in fuel-efficiency and global product architectures, the company is well positioned to meet these needs."
With gas prices averaging more than $4 per gallon in more than a dozen states, auto insurance companies may be seeing more people taking out policies on smaller vehicles.
