Four Florida men arrested for ransacking tornado-damaged homes in AlabamaPosted On Wed, May 4, 2011
Four Florida men posing as relief workers were arrested in Alabama after authorities spotted them stealing valuables from properties leveled by a recent spat of storms.
Officials said Anthony Dale Haislip, Christopher Elmore, Jon Berube and Christopher Ramsey - all in their twenties and thirties - were arrested and charged with looting in the Alabama town of Pleasant Grove.
In addition to looting, authorities said the Florida men were also charged with burglary, theft of property and possession of burglary tools.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Haislip, the apparent ring leader of the group, was being held on $250,000, while the rest of the men were being held on $200,000 bail.
The people's whose homes were looted were the victims of two significant events, as their homes were destroyed by an environmental disaster and then ransacked. Homeowners may worry that their home insurance policy only covers environmental damage, but policyholders should review their plan, as most basic dwelling and personal property policies include coverage for environmental disasters and theft.
