Former radio DJ pleads guilty to insurance fraudPosted On Tue, May 31, 2011
A former radio DJ in Rhode Island will plead guilty to trying to defraud a home insurance company out of more than $40,000.
According to the Associated Press, federal prosecutors say Lori Sergiacomi - also known as Tanya Cruise during her career as a disc jockey - of Providence and two others conspired to destroy some of Sergiacomi's property in 2010, totaling upwards of $40,000. Prosecutors tell the AP Sergiacomi had legitimate damage done to her home in the spring of 2010 as a result of flooding, but the two people she's alleged to have conspired with - John Zambarano and Vincent DiPaolo - encouraged her to do further damage to the home to increase the insurance claim.
The scheme was uncovered, according to the indictment obtained by the news service, when a separate investigation was conducted in regards to an extortion attempt made by Zabarano, who at the time was a city councilman.
The Providence Journal reports Sergiacomi's initial plea, made last November, was not guilty.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, questionable claims increased 9 percent between 2009 and 2010.
