Ford F-150 one of two trucks to receive top safety rating from IIHSPosted On Fri, May 27, 2011
U.S. car shoppers looking to buy a truck that's the safest on the road won't have to look far, as a recent report suggests the American carmaker Ford produces it.
According to crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Ford F-150 was one of only two pickup trucks that earned the IIHS' top safety rating when roof strength was evaluated. The other make and model was the Toyota Tundra.
The IIHS says pickup trucks' roof strength was assessed by pushing a large metal weight against the roof, and seeing how much force it could withstand before it began to crush downward at least five inches. Tests revealed the Toyota Tundra could withstand a force 4.5 times its own weight, while the Ford F-150 could handle 4.7 times its weight.
Other trucks evaluated included the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram, both of which received grades of "marginal," according to IIHS.
Because the Ford F-150 is one of the best selling and safest vehicles on the market today, auto insurance companies may offer discounts to people insuring one.
