Florida Health Care Freedom Act waiting on House vote

Posted On Fri, April 23, 2010

Florida, a leader in the lawsuit against the passage of the healthcare reform bill, will soon vote on a resolution that will prohibit penalties levied on residents that don't purchase health insurance.

On Monday, Florida's Rules and Calendar Council passed the resolution. It is also said to protect a patient's right to directly pay for medical attention. The state's House of Representatives will be the next group to review the resolution. The legislation has been modeled after the American Legislative Exchange Council's Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act that has already been enacted in three states.

ALEC health task force director Christie Herrera said that "ALEC applauds the Rules and Calendar Council's action to advance the cause of healthcare freedom in Florida."

The healthcare reform bill passed in March and was one of the most widely contested and sweeping pieces of legislation to become law in decades. While some changes, like insurance companies being required to offer coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, took effect almost immediately, it's not expected that the full scope of the law will be in place until 2014.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19732482-ADNFCR
