Fire safety group urges caution for the holidaysPosted On Mon, December 21, 2009
The holidays can present a variety of different insurance issues for people to be on guard against, with higher risks of theft, fire and health problems among those confronting many Americans.
One such example was provided recently by the National Fire Protection Association, which recently warned that Christmas trees can be an especially dangerous hazard.
"By understanding where holiday fire hazards exist, and taking some simple preventative steps to avoid them, people can greatly reduce their risk to fire and keep everyone in good cheer," said the association's president of communications, Lorraine Carli.
The group advises people to turn off Christmas tree lights when leaving home and to keep the trees watered so that they don't dry out and quickly become more of a fire hazard. People should also be sure the trees are not blocking exists and are kept at least three feet away from any heat source.
The organization also notes that increased use of candles during the holidays, as well as cooking, can pose additional fire hazards to be on guard against. With basic precautions against fire, consumers can avert potential tragedy and serious property damage, as well as having to make calls to their home insurance company.
