FDA finds common food ingredient to be tainted with salmonella

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is taking necessary steps to get a processed food ingredient off the shelves after it was found to be contaminated with the Salmonella Tennessee organism.

The affected ingredient, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, was discovered to be infected following an investigation at Basic Food Flavors Inc. in Las Vegas by the FDA following customer complaints. It was used most commonly used as a flavor enhancer in processed foods, including soups, sauces, hot dogs, seasoned snack foods, dips and dressings.

"Our investigators were able to identify this problem before any illnesses occurred," said FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg. "While the investigation is continuing, the agency is supporting reasonable steps to continue to protect the public health.”

According to the FDA, salmonella infections can potentially be deadly to those with weaker immune systems. Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea,vomiting, and abdominal pain for anywhere from four to seven days for a healthy individual without treatment.

In more serious cases, the infection can find its way into the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, an infection of the lining of the heart, and arthritis.
