Escaping winter weather may cause insurance troubles

Posted On Thu, November 29, 2012

Consumers who want to escape cold weather may find that they have a little trouble with their auto insurance policies, according to a leading industry analyst.

Drivers who spend their winters in Florida may be surprised to learn that they need to change their auto insurance coverage. According to state law, anyone who keeps a vehicle in the Sunshine state for more than 90 days a year (not necessarily consecutive) must register the car and comply with the state's regulation about auto insurance.

Florida law denotes that all registered cars must have an in-state auto insurance policy.

"If you register a car in Florida, you need to have Florida insurance," notes Penny Gusner, a consumer analyst for the news source.

The insurance rates for policies in the sunny southern state may be a little more than vacationers were expecting to pay. The law requires cars to have at least $10,000 in personal injury protection and $10,000 of liability coverage on their vehicle.
