Ensuring the home is prepared for winter importantPosted On Tue, October 18, 2011
A recent announcement from the Insurance Information Institute noted that it is important for consumers to examine their homes and prepare them for winter while the weather is still relatively warm.
It has been predicted that the winter could be colder than normal in the Eastern-part of the United States. Due to this, consumers may want to pay extra attention to the possibilities of cold-weather-related damage. More than $1 billion in damages have been blamed on storms over the past two decades.
"Standard homeowners policies cover winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, ice dams, and wind damage caused by weight of ice or snow, as well as fire-related losses," said Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the III. "Winter-related damage to cars is generally covered under the comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy."
Consumers who are afraid of the winter wreaking havoc on their home may want to make sure that their insurance policy has sufficient coverage. If not, it could be a good idea to inquire about home insurance quotes.
