Ensuring bike safety in the fallPosted On Fri, October 2, 2009
Bike riding is a hobby many people enjoy, and autumn is a good time to pedal out and enjoy the change of season.
However, bike riders should take the time to make sure they are properly prepared before taking to the road. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), bikes are covered under the personal property portion of home insurance policies.
The two kinds of personal property insurance are actual cash value and replacement cost coverage. Actual cash value property insurance takes into account an item's age and then reimburses people for its value. Replacement cost coverage is usually more expensive but gives people the amount it would cost to replace a bicycle at current costs.
Along with having bikes insured, people should make sure they use they use them in the safest way possible. That would include wearing a helmet and using reflective surfaces to ensure motorists can see the cyclist.
"Bike riding is not only good for the environment, it is a healthy way to relax, enjoy the fall foliage and get some exercise," Jeanne Salvatore, spokeswoman for the III, said. "Learning how to be a responsible cyclist, however, can reduce injuries and save lives."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that simply having a helmet is not enough when it comes to bicycle safety. Cyclists should make sure helmets are fitted properly in order to ensure their effectiveness.
