Employee incentives may help promote healthy lifestylesPosted On Fri, August 6, 2010
Costs for treating chronic health conditions, such as obesity and diabetes, have been growing. Preventative care measures can help lessen the severity, or in some cases eliminate, such conditions and the long-term care costs associated with them.
Employeers looking to cut down on their group health insurance plans may be able to do so with preventative care programs. Fidelity Investments and RedBrick Health recently created an "integrated health engagement platform," which provides users with an in-depth health assessment. The program also provides an action plan designed based on each person's unique health situation.
The platform allows employers to reward employees for participating in health programs through health care premium reductions, for example.
"In order to drive down expenses and improve employee health, many companies are asking workers to be more accountable for their health decisions and behaviors, as well as their share of the cost," said RedBrick Health chief executive officer Kyle Rolfing.
Implementing programs that promote healthy lifestyles may ultimately help save money on health insurance. The Kaiser Foundation says that health care costs exceeded $2.3 trillion last year.
