Electric car sales falteringPosted On Tue, March 8, 2011
If more people are jumping aboard the green movement by purchasing fuel-efficient cars, sales aren't indicating as such.
Earlier this week, Chevrolet issued its monthly sales report which indicated car purchases increased 69 percent in the month of February for most of their models. Good overall, but one model that didn't move so swiftly was the Chevy Volt. Last month, according to their report, Chevrolet sold just 281 of them. That's 0.1 percent of the 142,919 Chevrolet models moved in the month overall.
Nissan, maker of the electric Leaf, had its best February on record, as sales jumped 32 percent from January. But the same can't be said for the Leaf as just 67 of them were sold. And over the past two months, only 173 have left Nissan's showroom floors.
The Chevy Volt averages a retail price of $41,085, and the Nissan Leaf goes for $27,008.
Because of the dearth of electric cars in the market, it's likely consumers won't know what the average auto insurance premium price is for electric vehicles for some time.
