Education aims to cut obesity rates and healthcare costs

Posted On Tue, July 27, 2010

With health insurance costs rapidly rising every year, some are looking for ways to reduce people's need for treatment in the first place. One method of doing this is to cut down on obesity in childhood.

To help combat the health problem, Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and HealthTeacher are creating a curriculum designed to educate students about being healthy. The Obesity Society estimates that as many as one in five children are overweight in the country.

"If we can help teach kids about healthy lifestyles, the decisions they make can have a positive influence on not only their lives, but on their friends and family members as well," says Children's of Minnesota CEO and president Dr. Alan Goldbloom.

Only half of students in who took a Minnesota student survey indicated that they get enough daily physical exercise and even fewer eat the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.

It's hoped that through educational programs, like the one being devised, students will learn healthy behaviors that will ultimately make them live better lives and reduce health insurance costs.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19910163-ADNFCR
