Earthquake fault activity map updatedPosted On Thu, May 6, 2010
The earthquake fault activity map for California has been updated, the Associated Press reported.
Californians are no strangers to earthquakes, and officials hope that the new seismic map for the state will help residents become more prepared in the event this natural disaster occurs, the news agency said. This is the first update for the map since 1994, and 50 new fault lines are included on it.
These maps are essential to deciding where buildings will be constructed in the state, the AP said. "These maps are used to make a lot of other maps, to map landslides ... for tsunami coastal mapping," state geologist John Parrish told the news agency. "They can tell you what kind of a surface you're building on, and how close you are to a fault," Parish said.
There are now an estimated 15,000 fault lines in California, the AP said. The new, more detailed maps will also be linked to an interactive Google map.
Residents in California should check their home insurance policies to find out if they are covered in the event of an earthquake. If not, separate coverage can often be purchased.
