DUI arrests result in high auto insurance ratesPosted On Fri, August 7, 2009
Government statistics show that a growing number of women are jeopardizing their safety, finances and auto insurance rates by drinking and driving.
According to a recent Associated Press analysis, government statistics from across most of the country indicate that 28.8 percent more women were arrested for DUI in 2007 than in 1998. In contrast, 7.5 percent fewer men were arrested for DUI in that same time period.
"Women are picking up some of the dangerously bad habits of men," the AP quoted Chuck Hurley, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, as saying. The report also noted that some of the women arrested for DUI have had their children in the car at the time.
The report also cited figures from California showing that women accounted for 18.8 percent of the DUI arrests in California in 2007, compared to 13.5 percent in 1998.
Regardless of such statistics, anyone who is arrested for drunk driving is likely to face a steep increase in auto insurance costs, as well as expensive legal bills and other penalties.
