Posted On Thu, October 15, 2009

The effects of Chinese-made drywall are leaving many people with denied claims and canceled home insurance policies.

A recent story from the Associated Press notes that the Chinese drywall is blamed for corroding copper pipes and ruining televisions and air conditioners. According to state and federal sources cited by the AP report, the drywall releases a sulfur and organic compounds.

People who tried to file claims based on the damaging effects of the drywall are being denied by home insurance companies. Furthermore, some of them are having their home insurance policies canceled or not renewed.

According to the AP, the Chinese-made drywall is especially prevalent in Florida and the rest of the Southeast. David Durkee is a Florida attorney who represents a number of homeowners that are suing companies as a result of their drywall problems. He told the news organization that the problem will continue to grow.

"This is going to become critical mass very shortly," Durkee said to the AP.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the total number of incidents involving defective drywall climbed to 1,192 as of September of this year. Between August and September, 382 incidents were relayed to the CPSC. Overall, homes in 24 states and the District of Columbia have had drywall problems.
