Drunk drivers can expect high auto insurance ratesPosted On Tue, September 15, 2009
People are caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can generally expect a substantial increase in their auto insurance prices for years to come, along with stiff fines and legal fees, and possibly jail time.
With that in mind, it makes sense for people to remain sober if they plan to drive - and technology is making their chances of being caught higher than ever.
For example, an Associated Press report recently featured a program being tested by the federal government and some police departments in states like Idaho and Arizona.
According to the wire service, police participating in the program will be able to draw blood from drivers who they suspect of driving while impaired. This is expected to be particularly useful when dealing with suspects who refuse to take a breath test.
Overall, law enforcement officials have been stepping up their enforcement of impaired driving laws in recent months, and those who are caught may find themselves required to use ignition devices that prevent their cars from starting if alcohol is on their breath. However, that may be the least of a person's worries, in light of the high cost they will face in fines and auto insurance rates.
