Drowsy drivers nearly as dangerous as drunk drivers

Posted On Mon, June 11, 2012

A study from Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire de Bordeaux revealed that those who are sleep deprived are nearly as at risk to get into a car accident as those who consume a significant amount of alcohol.

The study noted that of the 679 drivers who were involved in car accidents and had no sleep for at least 24 hours, 355 drivers were at fault in their crash, Reuters reported. Most of those injured in these collisions were men younger than 55 years old. Approximately 50 percent of those who crashed were riding a motorcycle, while more than 30 percent were driving a car. Another 10 percent of these drivers were riding bikes. Not only were the risks tied to drinking or being sleep-deprived, but being a driver from ages 18 to 30 were attached as an increased risk, as well.

Other experts have explained similar findings, the news source noted.

"We know from experimental studies that just four hours of sleep loss will produce as much impairment as a six pack [of beer]," Christopher Drake, an associate scientist at the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Detroit, told the news source. "If you have a whole night of sleep loss, that's equivalent to having a blood alcohol content of 0.19."

The news source added that in most parts of the United States, the blood alcohol level limit for operating a vehicle legally is 0.08 percent.

It is important to drive well-rested and to avoid alcohol when operating a vehicle. However, many drivers do not practice this. In order to be prepared for the dangers of the road, it could be a good idea to look up multiple auto insurance quotes, so that a person can ensure they have a plan that is as sufficient as possible.
