Don't forget to prepare your home for cold weatherPosted On Wed, November 24, 2010
The mercury is dropping and people living in areas prone to cold weather are taking out their winter jackets and cranking up the heat. While people prepare themselves for colder temperatures, it's important they do the same for their homes.
PEMCO Insurance has tips for homeowners to prepare their investment for the imminent freezing temperatures. The insurer says homeowners can help reduce the likelihood of their pipes bursting by disconnecting garden hoses.
"Even wrapping your faucet with a dry rag or hand towel can ward off trouble," says PEMCO spokesman Jon Osterberg. "People should do that before the first freeze each fall. Do it now if you haven't already."
While home insurance can help pay to replace possessions, it's still best to avoid damage in the first place. Making sure any fixture exposed to extreme cold is properly protected can help prevent low temperatures from causing harm.
It's also advisable for homeowners to clear items, such as porch umbrellas, away from their house. Strong winds can turn such items into projectiles, which could break a window or other fixture.
