Distracted driving can lead to accidentsPosted On Tue, July 27, 2010
Distracted driving encompasses many tasks ranging from eating to even brushing one's hair while trying to drive. Many people are in such a rush that they aren't even thinking about the hazardous acts they are performing or the potential effects they can have.
Every year, thousands of people pointlessly lose their lives because someone felt that a text message or phone call couldn't wait. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that almost 6,000 people were killed by a distracted driver in 2008.
Vice president of the Insurance Information Institute Loretta Worters reminds drivers, in a statement, that they need to keep focused on the road.
"A car is not your living room, office or kitchen. It is a means of getting from one point to another and must be used judiciously," said Worters. "People can become so absorbed in their conversations or activities that their ability to concentrate on the crucial act of driving is severely impaired, jeopardizing the safety of vehicle occupants and pedestrians."
The III recommends that people pull off the road if they must use their cell phone and get themselves ready at home before jumping into the car. These simple steps can help people avoid accidents and increased car insurance premiums.
