Distracted driving campaign reaches milestonePosted On Tue, December 28, 2010
Allstate has established an initiative called "X the TXT" to help combat the practice of sending and receiving text messages while driving. Recently, the auto insurance provider announced that more than 100,000 people have become a "fan" of the program on social networking site Facebook.
Distracted driving has been cited as causing thousands of motor vehicle fatalities each year. While a number of actions can fall under the umbrella of distracted driving, cell phone use behind the wheel has been the target of many recent campaign efforts.
Allstate vice president of corporate relations Sari Macrie says the platform is helping to spread the words on the dangers of distracted driving.
"Fans are sharing stories, hearing from celebrities they respect and encouraging their friends and family to join the movement," says Macrie. "Our integrated social media and traditional grassroots campaign is making a difference."
Some of the celebrities backing the insurers program include Jordin Sparks and the Jonas Brothers.
Even if an accident doesn't result in a fatality, consequences still exist. Motorists can find themselves being charged higher auto insurance premiums if they are at fault in an accident.
