Diabetics urged to get out and exercisePosted On Mon, December 13, 2010
Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes face a number of health concerns. Frequently, those with the condition are overweight and may have difficulty performing some exercises.
However, research published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise says exercise is a must for diabetics. In fact, it's recommended those with type 2 diabetes get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.
Sheri Colberg of the American College of Sports Medicine says many diabetics are capable of being physically active.
"Many physicians appear unwilling or cautious about prescribing exercise to individuals with type 2 diabetes for a variety of reasons, such as excessive body weight or the presence of health-related complications," says Colberg. "However, the majority of people with type 2 diabetes can exercise safely, as long as certain precautions are taken."
In addition to getting adequate exercise, it's recommended people consume a diet with foods from a variety of groups. Eating well can help ensure one is getting all the proper nutrients. Such actions will not only help improve overall well-being, but could lead to lower life insurance premiums as well.
