Diabetes patients need continuous healthcare accessPosted On Fri, January 6, 2012
Consumers who have diabetes and do not receive continuous healthcare access can endanger their own well-being, according to a study from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research.
The study, which was published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, found that those with continuous healthcare coverage received a significant amount of necessary care, while many who did not lacked in such care. Nearly half of patients with constant coverage received three lipid tests in three years, while nearly three-quarters received at least three blood glucose checks, the study noted. Another 25 percent received flu shots, at least on an annual basis. Nearly one-fifth of these consumers received kidney damage screenings.
"Our study shows that patients need continuous health insurance coverage in order to ensure adequate preventive care, even when that care is provided at a reduced cost," said Dr. Rachel Gold, lead author and investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research.
Consumers who deal with chronic health conditions should be sure their healthcare plan covers their needs. If not, it may be a good idea to compare health insurance quotes to find a plan that works for them.
