Diabetes cases projected to risePosted On Wed, October 27, 2010
More Americans are overweight than ever before. Now, data shows that the number of people afflicted with with a disease that can stem from carrying extra weight, diabetes, is rapidly growing.
An analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects that one in three Americans will have diabetes in 2050. Currently, one in five adults has the condition. The report asserts that an aging population, an increase in minority groups who are likely to have the disease along with people living longer will also contribute to the rise in cases.
CDC Division of Translation Director Dr. Ann Albright says the analysis reveals how important it is for people to get healthy to help reduce incidences of type 2 diabetes.
"Successful programs to improve lifestyle choices on healthy eating and physical activity must be made more widely available, because the stakes are too high and the personal toll too devastating to fail," says Albright.
Eating a proper diet can help cut the likelihood of developing diabetes. Furthermore, fewer cases of the condition can translate into lower healthcare costs and life insurance premiums.
