Department of Transportation urges motorists to check their tires this summerPosted On Tue, June 7, 2011
With summer around the corner, motorists may be cheering that it's a season where serious adverse weather conditions are rare. But the Department of Transportation urges drivers to be aware of their tires, as the summer heat can cause them to wear away.
National Tire Safety Week is June 5 through June 11 and the DOT says it's the ideal time for motorists to do a tire check.
"As the weather warms up, it's especially important for drivers to ensure their tires are properly inflated," said DOT secretary Ray LaHood. "For your safety and the safety of others on the road, inspect your tires regularly and maintain the proper inflation."
The DOT says everyone should check their tires periodically, but they should be checked with more frequency the older they get, as they become more vulnerable to heat stress with age. Keep them properly inflated helps prevent this stress, the source reports.
Under-inflated tires may increase the chances drivers become involved in a car accident, which could lead to an increase in policyholders' auto insurance rates.
