Dates outlined for health insurance changesPosted On Tue, April 6, 2010
The approval of the healthcare reform overhaul was one of the largest and most sweeping acts of legislation in decades. With it comes a bevy of questions about changes and when they will be implemented.
Kaiser Health News reports that the new healthcare plan will be fully in place by 2016. However, some pieces of the legislation will go into affect before then. Kaiser also says that by 2014 all Americans will be required to have health insurance and federal subsidies will become available to help lower-income consumers buy coverage. Some exceptions for mandatory coverage are illegal immigrants, religious exemptions and those who are financially unable to afford it. While children with pre-existing conditions will start getting coverage in the immediate future, adults will have to wait until 2014, Kaiser said.
Numerous changes will be going into effect beginning September 23. Limits on coverage will be banned. Insurance companies won't be able to cancel a consumers coverage after an application has been approved. Consumers' children up to 26-years old can stay on a parent's plan. Kaiser says insurers will have to report if insurance premiums increase.
There are currently 32 million uninsured Americans who will be affected by the change in the healthcare law.
