Cranberry juice may improve heart health, says study

Posted On Mon, February 15, 2010

Drinking more cranberry juice products may be the key to improving one's heart health - and lowering their insurance premiums in the process - according to a new study conducted by the Queen Mary University in London.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, found that the oligomeric procyanidins contained in most cranberry juice products could help lower blood pressure.

"Red wine has long been associated with heart health, but this new study shows that cranberry juice is a very promising alcohol-free alternative," said Dr. Roger Corder of Queen Mary University, and the author of The Red Wine Diet. "We have now identified OPCs as the specific compound in cranberries that can boost the health of blood vessels, helping to prevent blood vessel constriction - a leading cause of high blood pressure."

In referencing the report to advertise its own products, Ocean Spray noted that a 2006 study by Ruehl et al had found that cranberry juice increased the levels of "good" HDL cholesterol while slowing down the oxidization of "bad" LDL cholesterol particles.

Improved heart health could substantially decrease one's risk of developing a number of potentially life threatening illnesses, such as various heart diseases, stroke, and high blood pressure. Additionally, a decreased risk of developing such illnesses could lessen the premiums they pay for health insurance coverage.
