Course teachers motorcyclists how to be safePosted On Tue, November 9, 2010
Whether a person is operating a motorcycle or a car, getting into an accident is one surefire way to see auto insurance premiums rise. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety has seen a recent increase in serious and even fatal motorcycle accidents.
While teens frequently learn how to operate a car through a driver's education course, there aren't as many options available to those wishing to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Louisiana's DPS is offering a course, however, to teach riders how to properly operate the vehicle.
"People sometimes buy a motorcycle and believe they can just hop on it and drive away," says Louisiana state police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson. "Being a good automobile or truck driver doesn't necessarily mean you're qualified or have the skills to properly operate a motorcycle."
Learning how to properly handle a motorcycle is one way riders can help ensure their safety along with other motorists on the road. Driving the speed limit and looking out for pedestrians and animals that may run into the street will help reduce the likelihood of being involved in an accident.
