Costs may force some to delay healthcarePosted On Tue, November 2, 2010
Some consumers lean towards health insurance plans with higher deductibles because the monthly payments are lower. However, some policies have a deductible as high as $5,000 that must be reached before coverage kicks in.
According to the California Health Interview Survey, thousands of California residents are on high-deductible plans, many of whom may opt to delay getting healthcare because of costs.
California Office of the Patient Advocate director Sandra Perez if people are better informed on health insurance options, they are more likely to select a plan that fits their needs and lifestyle.
"Consumers need information to choose the right coverage so they receive the care when needed, not just when they can afford it," says Perez. "Thus, it is essential that a consumer have access to reliable information and helpful decision-making tools to make an informed choice when selecting a health insurance plan."
Furthermore, the study found that nearly half of all Californians with insurance have an HMO plan, which is more than twice the national average. HMOs require policyholders to select a care provider from a network of physicians. PPOs, on the other hand, have a network of doctors to chose from.
